Manchester United target Cody Gakpo has named the five clubs he would want to play for, as he feels he will be ready to move “after this season”.

Links between Gakpo and some of Europe’s biggest sides have been prevalent for much of the past year. Indeed, that is thanks to the form he has shown during that period.

The PSV Eindhoven forward scored 12 goals and provided 13 assists in the Eredivisie last season. He also contributed to a further 11 goals in other competitions.

This season, his form has been frankly ridiculous. Gakpo has scored 13 goals and provided 17 assists in 23 games so far this campaign.

It is no surprise that links have ramped up as he has continued to wreak havoc.

Manchester United have looked the most likely to sign Gakpo of late. They are one of a number of European sides to have been linked with the 23-year-old.

Along with them have been Liverpool, Arsenal and Barcelona in recent weeks. A plan from the latter to snare Gakpo has led to United accelerating a potential approach.

Clearly, Erik ten Hag, who managed against Gakpo in the Netherlands last season, knows of his talents and is eager to utilise them for himself.

Gakpo sends message to five sides

Given Gakpo’s stellar form, this season in particular, it seems he is ready to make a move to a bigger side. While he is bossing the Eredivisie – currently the league’s top scorer – he could become one of Europe’s best.

A move to United, or another big European side, could allow him to make that jump.

That is just what he is eager to do. Indeed, Gakpo believes that he will soon be ready to make a big move.

“I think at the end of this season I will be ready to take that step. I feel like I was already that way at the start of this season, but after this season I’m even more ready to take that next step,” he said, via GOAL.

Indeed, there is no denying that he has levelled up even further from the player he was last season. Come the end of the current campaign, he should be more than ready for a new challenge.

Gakpo also told five sides to come calling, admitting it would be a dream to play for any of them.

“Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool. It would be an honour to play there, but I also have to see what kind of team would suit me best,” he said.

Indeed, a move to any of those sides would be a massive one for Gakpo. A few of them have been credited with an interest of late, so will feel they have a good chance of snaring Gakpo.

United will now feel particularly eager to snare him, give they were already very keen before his comments.
