Striker Jonathan David is determined to score the goals that secure European football for Lille but refused to rule out a future move to the Premier League.

The 23-year-old joined Lille in the summer of 2020, with the French club paying Gent in the region of €30m for his signature. Les Dogues pounced after the Canada interantional had bagged 30 goals from 60 Belgian Pro League appearances. And he has continued his upward curve at Stade Pierre-Mauroy, with 53 goals from 125 outings in all competitions.

The New York-born ace became the club’s leading scorer this century when bagging a hat-trick in a 3-3 draw against Lyon on Friday evening.

He broke Eden Hazard’s club record and now has 19 top-flight goals this term and 21 in all competitions.

The talented youngster was delighted to claim the record and leapfrog a player he admires greatly.

“This isn’t something I set out to do, but it feels great,” he said. “I have a lot of respect for Eden Hazard as a player. And to have broken his record here at home is very special.”

Lille now sit sixth in the Ligue 1 standings, just a solitary point behind fifth-placed Rennes.

They are only five points adrift of Monaco in third and still have a shot at Champions League qualification.

He has been heavily linked with Manchester United while Arsenal are known to be long-time admirers.

David has dropped a huge hint that he will end up in England’s top division, but not before he completes his business with Lille.

“My future? Focused on getting this great club back to Europe where it belongs,” he added. “The rest will come. Premier league? One of the best leagues in the world, so why not?”

Premier League move on cards for David

Arsenal have enjoyed a superb top-flight campaign in 2022-2023 and sit top of the table after 26 games.

They are two points clear of Manchester City with a game in hand, making the short trip across London to face Fulham on Sunday.

Mikel Arteta has been roundly praised for his recruitment since taking the Emirates reins.

He has Gabriel Jesus as his star striker but could do with back up. The Brazil ace has struggled with injury this season although his team-mates have stepped up in his absence.

But the Spanish tactical has been tipped to strengthen this summer. Sporting director Edu might therefore finally get the man he has been tracking for three years.

However, Manchester United remain in the frame along with RB Leipzig. That is according to Fabrizio Romano. But wherever he ends up, it seems as though David would love to play in England.

In a recent interview he admitted: “The furthest I can see for the moment is the next game and helping Lille get back into top four.

“Saturday mornings growing up in Canada were about the Premier League and La Liga. The Premier League and La Liga are every kid’s dream.”

He has been just as prolific at interantional level, with 22 goals for Canada from just 38 appearances.
