Leicester City are listening to offers for James Maddison and Man Utd have established themselves among his potential next takers, according to a report.

The Daily Telegraph has revealed that Leicester – who are 18th in the table ahead of Monday night’s crucial fixture against 19th-placed Everton – will sell Maddison regardless of whether they stay in the Premier League or suffer relegation to the Championship. After all, they recently posted record financial losses and need to balance the books.

As a result, just like Fabrizio Romano recently sensed, Maddison will be up for sale in the summer. For one, he is Leicester’s prize asset, while the fact that his contract is due to expire next year only adds to the logic behind cashing in on him.

According to the report, Maddison has become of interest to Man Utd, Newcastle and Tottenham. In order to sign him, any of the suitors will have to make a bid between £45m and £60m to appease Leicester.

For now, his focus will be on helping Leicester to stay in the Premier League. But even if they do finish 17th or above, Maddison will likely have reached the end of his journey with the Foxes.

Since joining the club from Norwich City in 2018, Maddison has made 198 appearances, scoring 54 goals and adding 39 assists. He was a part of their squad that won the FA Cup and Community Shield in 2021, and has represented them on the European stage on 19 occasions across the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons.

This season, he has played 27 times in all competitions, getting nine goals and seven assists from his 25 Premier League outings.

Now 26 years of age, the prime of his career is approaching. If he joins Man Utd or Newcastle, he should have Champions League football on offer next season, since both currently look comfortable in the top four of the Premier League table.

In contrast, Tottenham could be in the Europa League, Europa Conference League, or have no involvement in a UEFA competition at all.

James Maddison to become next big Leicester City export

Only time will tell which of Maddison’s suitors make firm bids to sign the two-cap England international. But if a player of his ability is available at a reasonable price, then there will be plenty of interest in his services.

An asking price towards £60m, in all honesty, might be optimistic from Leicester, given the lack of time remaining on Maddison’s contract.

However, they have historically held out for good deals when selling their key players. They collected £60m or more from the sales of Riyad Mahrez to Manchester City, Harry Maguire to Man Utd and Wesley Fofana to Chelsea in 2018, 2019 and 2022 respectively.

This year, Maddison could be their major departure.
