What the Man Utd squad and manager Erik ten Hag truly think about the histrionics of Bruno Fernandes has come to light, while Fabrizio Romano revealed what’s likely to happen with the club’s captaincy.

Fernandes has become a lightning rod for criticism in the wake of Man Utd’s humbling 7-0 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday.

Harry Maguire remains the club’s official captain, though in lieu of his demotion to the bench, the armband has generally been worn by Fernandes this season.

However, many within the media took aim at Fernandes for what they believed was a performance unworthy of a United skipper in the Liverpool loss.

Roy Keane and Gary Neville were two such figures to go in hard on the Portuguese. Keane labelled Fernandes’ display “disgraceful”, while Neville branded the 27-year-old “embarrassing”.

Calls also began to grow for Ten Hag to award the armband to a different player. Articles in Goal and the Manchester Evening News were among many to demand a change.

Now, speaking on his YouTube channel, trusted reporter Fabrizio Romano has delivered the inside track on the Fernandes captaincy debate.

Romano stressed it’s “too easy” for people to wade in on Fernandes after one bad display. The journalist claimed Fernandes maintains excellent relationships with both his Man Utd teammates and manager Ten Hag, and the “expectation” is a captaincy change will not occur.

Bruno Fernandes “really appreciated” by all at Man Utd

“Bruno Fernandes is really appreciated by his teammates,” said Romano. “He has a fantastic relationship with many of his teammates, there’s no problem at all with his teammates.

“He’s also really appreciated by Erik ten Hag. When Ten Hag agreed to become Man Utd’s manager almost one year ago, one of the first things he told the board was to approve a contract extension for Bruno Fernandes.

“So he’s always been a player appreciated by Ten Hag and he’s also the same guy who was lifting the League cup just a few days ago.

“I think it’s too easy just a few days after the terrible game against Liverpool to go against Bruno Fernandes.

“What he’s doing for the club and for his teammates is really important, in terms of goals and assists but also leadership.”

Romano concluded by stating the “expectation” is Fernandes will continue on as stand-in skipper and he retains a “great relationship” with all his teammates.
