Man Utd got what they deserved against Arsenal after “arrogant” Erik ten Hag chose to get rid of Cristiano Ronaldo, according to Piers Morgan.
The Gunners ran out 3-2 winners at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday with a brace from Eddie Nketiah and a brilliant strike from Bukayo Saka cancelling out goals from Marcus Rashford and Lisandro Martinez.
Morgan’s interview with Ronaldo was a key reason for the Portugal international’s departure from Old Trafford at the end of November after the striker criticised the club, manager, former players, senior executives and more in a controversial 90 minutes.
Man Utd agreed to terminate his contract with Ronaldo clearly wanting to leave the club for the money on offer in Saudi Arabia.
The Red Devils have temporarily boosted their attacking ranks with the loan signing of Wout Weghorst from Burnley and it’s rumoured that Man Utd will spend big on a striker in the summer.
But Morgan took a strange swipe at Man Utd, after the Gunners beat them in the dying minutes on Sunday, with the broadcaster calling Ten Hag “arrogant” over his treatment of Ronaldo and likening Weghorst to “an Austrian sausage”.
Morgan wrote on Twitter: “Congrats Manchester United – that’s what happens when you hire an arrogant coach who disrespects the GOAT so badly he leaves – and then replaces him with someone I’ve never heard of who sounds like an Austrian sausage.”
After hitting out at Man Utd, Morgan had praise for his own team with the former News of the World editor loving the atmosphere at the Emirates.
Morgan added: “Best atmosphere I’ve ever experienced at the Emirates yesterday. And if you want to know why Arsenal fans now believe we can win the League, look no further than these two guys – such talent, skill, passion, drive, determination & hunger for the PL title.”
Speaking about joining Arsenal, Oleksandr Zinchenko said after the match on Sunday: “I started to speak in the dressing room like, guys forget top three or whatever, we need to think about the title. Some of them were laughing, but now no one is laughing.”
And that delighted Morgan, who continued: “This is what we lacked for so many years: players with a winner’s mentality.”
After the match, when asked for his thoughts on the first half of the Premier League campaign, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta replied: “Extraordinary.
“It doesn’t get much better than that. We deserved the points that we have. I think we have played well enough to win most of the matches.
“But the reality is that we have things we can get better at. Attacking and defending in transitions. That’s the aim.”
