Manchester United have now reportedly ‘ruled out’ a move for Frenkie de Jong, but the Barcelona star would consider a ‘sensational offer’ from Chelsea.
The Red Devils have been targeting De Jong throughout this summer, with new boss Erik ten Hag identifying him as a key target.
Earlier this week, it was reported that United and Barcelona had come to a ‘full agreement’ over the transfer which would see United pay an initial €75m plus €10m extra in add-ons.
Barcelona told De Jong a move to United would be ‘best for his career’ but the Dutchman is having none of it and has joined the Catalans on their preseason tour.
Reports suggest United are willing to bide their time until the end of the window to get their man, but Sport claim Ten Hag’s side will now move on to other targets; they’ve ‘already ruled out’ pursuing De Jong further.
Chelsea have also been linked with a move for the 25-year-old this summer, and the report claims they remain interested.
It’s said De Jong would consider a move to Stamford Bridge if the the Blues made a ‘sensational offer’ to sign him.
Former United striker Teddy Sheringham does not think De Jong would “set the world alight” at Old Trafford, and urged United to consider a couple of “statement” signings.
“He’s a big name but I don’t think he is one that is going to set the world alight at United and really come in and grab it by the scruff of the neck,” Sheringham said.
“If they’d have gone out and broken the bank for Declan Rice or Harry Kane – I know West Ham and Spurs fans are going to castigate me again for saying this sort of thing – but that is what you have got to do to make a statement.
“Ten Hag has got one hell of a job on his hands to change the vibe of the dressing room around but signings like that would change the whole ethos of where Man United are going.
“The signings that they’ve made are okay at best… and that is how fans will see it as well.”
