Will it ever end? Man Utd are “not happy” with the situation surrounding Frenkie de Jong as they are still no closer to signing the Barcelona midfielder.

The Red Devils have now been chasing deal for the Netherlands international for over two months and, despite some progress a few weeks ago, the deal is now at a complete and utter standstill.

Man Utd are desperate for reinforcements in midfield with pundits, supporters and former players identifying the middle of the park as one of their biggest issues in recent years.

They have brought in Christian Eriksen as a creative option in midfield but they could still do with upgrades on Fred and/or Scott McTominay. The pair always give their all but the Red Devils need something better if they are to eventually challenge towards the top of the league.

De Jong is their main target for central midfield but there have been reports in recent days suggesting that Man Utd are ‘weighing up’ whether they should walk away from the potential transfer.

Man Utd and Barcelona have had a broad agreement in place for a few weeks now with the Red Devils ready to pay €85m whenever De Jong decides to okay the transfer.

But that seems some way off with the Catalan giants owing De Jong around £17m in deferred wages and bonuses from during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

De Jong would prefer to stay at Barcelona – who are trying to get him to slash his salary by almost 50 per cent – but the La Liga club would reportedly rather get him off the wage bill to free up room for other signings.

A recent report insisted that De Jong hasn’t said ‘no’ to a move to Man Utd or Chelsea this summer but that he wants to know how and when he will get the money owed to him before sealing a move away.

And the Red Devils are understood to be getting more and more frustrated by the situation which is starting make them look bad.

“Man United are not happy with the developments,” Romano told his YouTube channel.

“It is more than two months working on this deal and still no update. Man United still have an agreement with Barcelona, not with Frenkie de Jong.

“Frenkie as of today is still insisting to stay at Barcelona and not take a salary cut.

“This is an important point. Frenkie doesn’t want to reduce his salary, Frenkie wants to continue at Barcelona.

“He loves the city, he loves the club, he feels the team is fantastic, he wants to stay.”
