Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray has likened the ‘amazing talent’ of Manchester United loanee Amad Diallo to that of a current Liverpool midfielder.
Amad initially struggled after arriving on loan at the Stadium of Light, but the arrival of Mowbray as manager appears to have had a positive impact on the young winger.
Indeed, the 20-year-old has started the last three Championship outings after rediscovering his best form.
Amad scored his first goal for the club against Burnley a fortnight ago and was on target again in the win at Huddersfield on Wednesday evening.
The young attacker played a big role in that victory on the road, being involved in the build-up for the first before sealing the points after a quick counter attack.
And speaking afterwards, Mowbray praised the youngster’s impact and believes he has the same potential to eventually break into the United first team that Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott showed during his loan stint under Mowbray at Blackburn.
Mowbray said: “At Blackburn Rovers, we had Harvey Elliott for a whole season (2020-21). And sometimes they have to make the step up.
“Amad has got amazing talent like Harvey Elliott had amazing talent.
“Whether he makes the jump to play for Manchester United, where they have to win every game, we’ll have to see what the future holds. But I’m really pleased that he’s with us.’
“We can see on the training pitch that he’s got amazing talent. You can see why Manchester United might’ve paid an incredible amount of money for him.
“The ball sticks to his foot, he’s fast and he knows where the net is. He just has to play football and enjoy it.”
Amad has the ability to go far
Mowbray also praised Amad after his performance against Luton at the weekend, saying: “With his physical data, he was top in every aspect from distance covered to number of high-speed sprints, he was amazingly athletic as well as showing his talent.
“That bodes well for us and also accelerates him in my mind in terms of him being a starting player for us, beyond a young lad who I can bring off the bench.”
Diallo is set to be back in action for Sunderland on Saturday when the Black Cats face Cardiff at home.
As for United, they face Real Sociedad in the Europa League on Thursday evening. A two-goal win will see them top the group and go straight through to the last 16.
