Manchester United are reportedly considering making a move for a former Premier League keeper to replace long-serving stopper David de Gea as they look to revamp their goalkeeping department.
The Spaniard is currently in the last year of his contract at Old Trafford, although United do have an option to take up a further 12-month deal if they choose to do so.
But, at this stage, it’s unclear whether the Red Devils will stick with De Gea for another season or start a new chapter at No.1.
But if they opt for the latter, Calciomercatoweb states that Juventus star Wojciech Szczesny is on their radar.
Juve are said to be considering major changes to their squad after a struggle in recent seasons. To that end, Szczesny is one of a number of veteran stars who could be sacrificed.
The Poland international has been their No.1 choice since signing from Arsenal in 2017. In total, the 32-year-old has made 190 aoppearances for the Serie A giants.
However, Szczesny has only 18 months remaining on his existing contract. That realistically leaves January or next summer as Juve’s best chance of recouping a decent fee for the player.
Calcio adds that De Gea himself is being considered as a potential option for the Turin giants, while they are also after Empoli’s Guglielmo Vicario.
United have other keeper targets
As for United’s other targets, moves for Brighton stopper Robert Sanchez and FC Porto’s Diogo Costa have both been mooted.
However, Szczesny would probably come significantly cheaper than both of those options.
The Pole turns 33 next April. But in terms of keepers, the early 30s is when they are considered to be in their prime.
Much now depends on what United choose to do with De Gea‘s one-year extension.
The Spaniard, much like United, got off to a rocky start to the season. However, things have turned around in the last couple of months.
The Red Devils are currently fifth in the Premier League table, three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham with a game in hand.
However, they are not back in domestic action until late December when they face Burnley in the Carabao Cup.
