Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole is not convinced Wout Weghorst can make an impact at Old Trafford after his “absolutely terrible time at Burnley”.
Erik ten Hag is hoping to bring in a new striker this month following Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit.
United were expected to bolster that position next summer but have brought their transfer search forward to the January window.
Weghorst recently emerged as a surprise target, with Besiktas needing to terminate the Burnley striker’s season-long loan for a move to Old Trafford to become possible.
Many were taken aback by news of United’s interest; none more so than former Netherlands playmaker Wesley Sneijder, who said the deal “must be a stunt”.
And Cole says he “was as surprised as anybody” to see the Red Devils attempt to bring in the Burnley flop.
“Wow! When I heard about Weghorst I was as surprised as anybody,” he told Casinos En Ligne.
“I know he got a couple of goals in the World Cup and he’s on loan in Turkey now but he had an absolutely terrible time at Burnley.
“You can only say if he had such a tough time at Burnley what can we really expect if he comes to Manchester United?”
Cole also questioned Chelsea’s pursuit of Joao Felix – who is expected to join on loan from Atletico Madrid for an £11million fee, plus £8million in wages.
“Felix is undoubtedly a class player but if you’re talking about £10m for a loan fee you might as well try to get the deal done on a permanent basis if you fancy him,” the ex-Red Devils hitman added.
“I think he’ll create a lot of goals but will he score a lot, Erling Haaland style? No. The two are totally different players.”
A deal to sign Weghorst looks to have edged slightly closer.
Romano believes Besiktas will be paid £3m, though they will only approve the deal if they can bring in a replacement.
It is not clear how long that will take and if the Turkish side want a signing to be through the door before Weghorst leaves.
The Red Devils had held talks with Weghorst’s Netherlands teammate Memphis Depay.
With the 30-year-old close to moving to Old Trafford, it would be surprising to see Ten Hag bring in Depay as well.
