Man Utd given seal of approval for club-record summer signing; he is Ten Hag’s ideal Rashford partner
Former Manchester United striker Ighalo has urged the club to pen a deal for his fellow Nigeria international, Victor Osimhen.
It’s no secret that the Red Devils have had the Napoli centre-forward on their radar for several months, but it could take a monumental fee to get a summer transfer done.
Now, Ighalo has suggested that Osimhen would be the perfect strike partner for Marcus Rashford, who has been in unbelievable form under Erik ten Hag.
Speaking to Sky Sports News, Ighalo said: “I think it’s a good fit because he’s a young boy, he runs and he scores goals.
“Having Osimhen and Rashford in the top at Manchester United will cause any defender panic because they’re two fast players and they’re goalscorers.”
The former Red’s comments come three years after United first registered an interest in Osimhen, attempting to sign the forward while he was still playing for Lille in France.
However, the 24-year-old rejected the switch to Old Trafford ‘out of respect’ for Ighalo, who at the time was still a United player, as he didn’t want to compete with his fellow countryman for a spot in the starting XI.
Osimhen could turn Man Utd into title contenders
As mentioned, Ten Hag seems to have made bringing in a new centre-forward for next season his top priority, with Osimhen at the top of his shortlist.
The young striker is statistically one of the most prolific goal scorers in Europe at the moment. This term, Osimhen has scored 19 goals in 21 Serie A appearances, along with making four assists, giving him an incredible average of 1.1 goal contributions per match.
Indeed, Osimhen has played a huge role in Napoli’s recent success, with the Italian giants currently 15 points clear at the top of the table, heading towards their first league title since 1990.
If the Nigerian can have a similar impact at Man Utd, he could arguably be exactly what they need to reassert themselves at the top of the Premier League.
Previously, the Red Devils have generally opted to bring in experienced centre-forwards, such as the likes of Edinson Cavani, Cristiano Ronaldo and most recently, Wout Weghorst, but now, they want a more long-term option.
Other names that have been reportedly considered include Tottenham captain Harry Kane and Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic, but Osimhen is thought to be Ten Hag’s first choice.
However, as previously reported by TEAMtalk, Osimhen could potentially cost up to 160m (£141m) this summer, which would be a new club record fee. So, United will have to put their money where their mouth is to get the sensational deal done.
Saying that, if Ten Hag believes that Osimhen has what it takes to help the Red Devils consistently challenge for more major trophies, he will be worth every penny.
