Manchester United and Aston Villa will have a great chance at signing Marcus Thuram from Borussia Monchengladbach after one of their club coaches made an eye-opening admission about his future.
Thuram’s contract situation is leading to plenty of interest from clubs in England and across Europe. His Gladbach deal expires next summer, and this means he can sort a pre-contract agreement with interested clubs from January 1 under the Bosman ruling.
The striker represents a potential steal if someone can get him on the cheap, or potentially on a free transfer. He is in great form, having found the net 13 times in 17 matches so far this campaign.
It’s no surprise several Premier League teams are keeping tabs on the situation ahead of potential moves for Thuram. Man Utd could move for him to become Cristiano Ronaldo’s replacement, following the 37-year-old’s recent contract termination.
Arsenal are also on the chase for Thuram. Perhaps the France international could rival Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah for a starting spot up front at the Emirates. However, the Gunners will come up against one of their former managers in the pursuit for Thuram.
On November 9, German newspaper Bild claimed Unai Emery was hoping Aston Villa would battle Arsenal and Man Utd for the attacker.
Gladbach’s assistant manager Oliver Neuville has now spoken openly about a potential January exit for Thuram. Man Utd and Villa have essentially been given the go-ahead to sign him, as Neuville admits it will be very hard to prevent the 25-year-old from leaving for a top club.
“He’s having a great season, he scored a lot of goals,” the coach said (via Sport Witness).
‘Difficult’ for striker to stay at Gladbach, admits coach
“It’s clear that last year he may have been injured a lot, but he still has a contract until the end of the season.
“I think it will be difficult for him to stay at Gladbach because if he continues to score so many goals it is certain that he will have many offers in Italy or Spain or England.
“You also have to be a bit realistic. I hope he stays here at Monchengladbach, but now he has also been called up by the French national team for the World Cup.
“It will be difficult for him to extend his contract, I hope so, but the chances are slim.”
This season in particular, Thuram has proven he has the ability to shine for a bigger club than Gladbach. While they have some good players, they currently sit eighth in the Bundesliga table and will probably miss out on European qualification.
Thuram, in contrast, will hope to link up with a team competing in the Champions League or Europa League next. He will feel he has done enough to earn such a move.
Immediately, this will put the likes of Man Utd and Arsenal ahead of Villa in his pecking order. Arsenal are challenging Man City for the Premier League title, while Man Utd are aiming for a top-four finish.
Villa, on the other hand, had a slow start under Steven Gerrard and Emery has to pick up the pieces. They will be looking to get into the top 10, but European qualification looks unlikely.
As such, Emery may have to admit defeat in the race for Thuram’s services. This would be a boost for the likes of Man Utd and Arsenal.
Elsewhere, a former Arsenal player believes Cristiano Ronaldo would be a ‘perfect’ signing for the Gunners.
