A Bayern Munich transfer is practically falling into Erik ten Hag’s hands after Fabrizio Romano revealed a Man Utd move has been given a huge double boost.

While those around them splashed the cash in January, Man Utd were content to sanction just a trio of cheep and cheerful loan signings.

Jack Butland filled the void left by Martin Dubravka after the goalkeeper was recalled by Newcastle. Wout Weghorst joined from Burnley after seeing a separate loan spell at Besiktas cut short.

That would’ve been the extent of United’s business, though an ankle injury sustained by Christian Eriksen in late-January prompted a last-gasp move for Marcel Sabitzer.

The Austria international has bedded in well at Old Trafford since arriving from Bayern Munich. Indeed, he’s already made nine appearances and notched a vital first strike for the club when scoring the go-ahead goal in the FA Cup against Fulham on Sunday.

Sabitzer’s loan deal does not contain an option to buy. However, according to Fabrizio Romano, a permanent move that would be negotiated from scratch is there for the taking.

Such a deal will come with the advantage of United and Ten Hag already knowing exactly what they’ll get. By all accounts, Sabitzer has performed well thus far and through his loan spell, would not require a bedding-in period if signed outright.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano revealed Sabitzer is not in Bayern’s plans next season. The German giant hope to refresh their options in the engine room and a Sabitzer sale will seemingly be greenlit.

From the player’s end, Romano added the 29-year-old would “love” to remain at Old Trafford for the long haul.

Sabitzer to join Man Utd outright?

“Man Utd will make a decision at the end of the season for Marcel Sabitzer,” said Romano. “But the expectation on the Bayern side is not to have Sabitzer in the squad for next season.

“They are planning to refresh in that position and so Sabitzer could be on the move.

“It’s also important to mention Man Utd don’t have a buy option clause included, but they can negotiate with Bayern at the end of the season.

“They’ll make a decision in around May or June, but on the player’s side, the feeling is he would love to continue in the Premier League. He’d love to continue at Man Utd.”

With Bayern open to a sale and Sabitzer dreaming of signing for United outright, a deal is clearly there for the making if Ten Hag desires.

But for an untimely injury suffered by Eriksen, the prospect of Sabitzer signing for United on loan – never mind outright – was an extremely unlikely one.

The Dane’s misfortune may ultimately work in Sabitzer’s favour in a way very few expected.
