Former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan has been impressed with what he has seen from fellow countryman Darwin Nunez at Liverpool so far.
Nunez arrived at Anfield last summer for an initial fee of £64million, which could rise as high as £85m, but has not quite had the impact that many Liverpool supporters hoped for.
It’s fair to say that he’s not been helped by Erling Haaland’s blistering start to life at Manchester City.
The 23-year-old did score in his first two games for the club. However, he was then forced to serve a three-match ban for a red card against Crystal Palace.
That seemed to set him back a bit as he went five games without a goal before notching in defeat at Arsenal in early October.
However, a good run of recent form has seen Nunez take his Liverpool tally to nine in 18 games.
And Forlan likes what he has seen from his compatriot. But he also expects Jurgen Klopp to play a major factor in Nunez’s continued improvement.
Nunez improving all the time
Speaking to talkSPORT, Forlan said: “I think he’s been good. I think maybe everybody was expecting more goals or maybe because of the amount of money they paid for him. But I think he’s really good.
“He’s been scoring goals, he’s playing. It’s difficult, now also the team is struggling a little bit because in the Premier League they’re not doing the way they were doing the last couple of years.
“But he has a great manager, very experienced. He will learn a lot with him and also with the players.
“So I think he’s doing his job and of course he can improve, and he will improve in the future.”
Nunez is set for a busy few weeks in Qatar as he looks to guide Uruguay to World Cup success.
The Reds frontman is part of a strong Uruguay attack that also includes Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez, along with Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur.
La Celeste are in a group with Ghana, Portugal and South Korea as they look to reach the last 16.
As for Liverpool, they are not back in action until December 22 when they head to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup last 16.
