Man Utd close in on critical forward deal that owes much to Ten Hag brilliance, says Fabrizio Romano
Manchester United are closing in on a new deal for forward Marcus Rashford, who has been in sparkling form for club and country.
There’s no hiding from the fact that Rashford didn’t quite seem himself throughout last season. The 25-year-old scored just four league goals and struggled to consistently make an impact.
Erik ten Hag has managed to get Rashford back to his best this season and he could be rewarded with a fresh contract.
The United forward was also on target for England in the World Cup against Iran. Rashford made an instant impact from the bench and scored England’s fifth goal.
The 25-year-old is playing with real confidence at the moment and is thriving under Ten Hag.
In the Premier League this season he has already matched his tally from last season with four goals. He has also scored three Europa League goals and provided three assists this season.
Man Utd want to offer Rashford new deal
According to reports, Man Utd are planning to offer Rashford a new long-term deal at Old Trafford.
His current deal with United runs until the summer of 2023, although the club does have the option to extend his contract by a further year.
As Fabrizio Romano explains in his exclusive Daily Briefing, “Manchester United will offer Marcus Rashford a new deal, it’s part of their plans.
“Even though his current contract expires in 2023, nothing is expected to end next summer as Man Utd have the option of a clause to extend his contract for one more year.
“Erik ten Hag considers Rashford as really important player for the present and future.”
There has been plenty of debate surrounding Rashford and what his best position actually is. His game time this season has been split between playing through the middle and on the left-hand side.
In 322 appearances for United, Rashford has scored 101 goals and now seems to be back to his best.
Ten Hag’s faith paid off
Ten Hag had a big decision to make on Rashford when he first came into the club, given his struggles in 2021-22.
Rashford has been quick to praise Ten Hag and the role he has played in turning around his form.
During an interview with the PA news agency, Rashford explained: “The manager’s a joy to work with, really. Is it hard work? Yeah, but I think we are enjoying it and we’re playing better football.
“I feel like I’m getting there,” he said when asked about his recent performances. “But, yeah, I’m a lot more happy, I’m enjoying myself a lot more.
“We’ve had some new signings come in the summer and we’ve just managed to make it work and build that team spirit as quickly as we did.
“I feel like the players have integrated well and we’re learning about each other more and more.”
