Man Utd reportedly beat Chelsea and Newcastle United to sign Marcel Sabitzer on loan from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich on deadline day.

The Red Devils swooped to sign Sabitzer on deadline day after it was revealed that Christian Eriksen will be out of action through injury until April.

The Denmark international has surpassed expectations this term as he has been in stunning form alongside former Real Madrid star Casemiro.

Eriksen will be sorely missed while he is out but Man Utd moved quickly to replace him before the transfer window closed earlier this week.

Sabitzer joined Bayern Munich in 2021 from league rivals RB Leipzig. He captained the Bundesliga outfit while he was at the club but he has only been a bit-part player for the Bundesliga table-toppers.

A loan move makes sense for all parties as Sabitzer will likely feature regularly for United at least until Eriksen is back available. Sabitzer’s agent thinks his player will shine in the Premier League as he is a “killer” and “always wants to win”.

Christian Falk is reporting that United were ‘leading from the beginning’ ahead of Chelsea and Newcastle.

The journalist also notes that there is no buy option in the deal but he will ‘most likely be sold in the summer’.

‘Ryan Gravenberch wasn’t the No.1 option for Manchester United in the winter window. Gravenberch was already told he wouldn’t be sold at the time so it was just Marcel Sabitzer who would be given permission to leave,’ Falk wrote for Caught Offside.

‘For Sabitzer, it was an interesting few rounds of poker. First, there was nothing and then there were three Premier League clubs interested in him. Chelsea were confirmed to me as an interested party.

‘Also, interestingly, Newcastle knocked on the door but had no chance against Chelsea and United. United were leading from the beginning and they made it happen.

‘I’ve heard that reports of an option-to-buy for Sabitzer are inaccurate. Bayern Munich are keeping their cards close to the chest on this one.

‘They are very optimistic that if he performs well at United they can get a good deal for him. He will most likely be sold in the summer. Konrad Laimer will come in as a free agent in the summer – it’s not signed and official yet but it will come.

‘It’s a good option, ultimately, for Bayern to try and increase Sabitzer’s transfer value with this move to the Premier League.’

Despite this, Bayern Munich attacker Thomas Muller is confident that Sabitzer’s chapter at the club is “not over yet”.

“I personally – and I think the team as well – was surprised,” Muller said.

“(He’s) a cool guy and a super player. He will be back in the summer. So, the chapter isn’t over yet.”
