Manchester United and Chelsea could launch bids for a Bayern Munich defender in the new year after Fabrizio Romano revealed he is gunning for a move to England.
Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag will be busy formulating his January transfer plans while the World Cup is on. He needs a new striker as the club looks set to sack Cristiano Ronaldo following his now infamous interview.
After originally setting their sights on Bayern forward Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Man Utd were told he was not for sale. Since then, the Red Devils have begun targeting Napoli and Nigeria man Victor Osimhen.
An alternative is Atletico Madrid star Joao Felix. According to Spanish newspaper AS, Felix wants to leave Atleti this winter and could therefore secure a move to Old Trafford.
The report brings up the possibility of Felix joining Man Utd on a six-month loan deal. This would give Ten Hag the chance to find his long-term striker successor at the end of the campaign.
Ten Hag doesn’t just want to amend his striker options in January. He wants Man Utd chiefs to sell right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka, which would leave space for a new defender to arrive in Manchester.
And a move for a Bayern player looks like a good option following his recent comments and an update from Romano.
The man in question is Benjamin Pavard. The right-back, who can also operate at centre-half, is currently on international duty with France. He will be hoping to get some game time when France come up against Australia in their World Cup opener on Tuesday night.
Bayern ace hopeful of joining ‘new project’
Earlier this month, Pavard got Man Utd’s attention by telling French outlet L’Equipe he is open to a new challenge.
“There’ve been no concrete talks over [a] new contract,” he admitted. “I’ve immense respect for Bayern — I’m not against discovering a new project.
“Maybe now is the time. Why not discover [a] new country? The sporting project has to be interesting.”
And Romano has put Man Utd on alert by providing more information on Pavard’s situation. During an interview with CaughtOffside, the transfer guru spoke about Chelsea’s interest in the 26-year-old.
He went on to reveal that Pavard would ‘love’ to play in the Premier League.
Fabrizio Romano gives verdict on Benjamin Pavard
“Pavard was discussed with Chelsea last summer but was not a top priority,” Romano declared. “Now it’s normal that clubs are keeping info on him as Pavard is open to leave Bayern in 2023.
“He’d love [a] Premier League move I’m told. But there is still nothing serious.”
Romano’s comments mean Man Utd could go up against Chelsea for Pavard’s services in the January transfer window.
They will find no hesitation from Pavard as he clearly wants to swap Bayern for a different project abroad, potentially in England.
But Man Utd and Chelsea will have to deal with Bayern if they want to get the move over the line.
As shown by Barcelona’s talks for Robert Lewandowski, Bayern are tough negotiators. They only sell players when the price is right.
This means Man Utd and Chelsea will have to match Bayern’s valuation if they are to bring Pavard to the Prem. There is no mention of how much he may cost, but transfermarkt value the full-back at €35m (currently £30.2m).
Meanwhile, Monday’s Transfer Gossip claims Ronaldo has offered himself to a La Liga club as part of his attempts to leave Man Utd.
