SINGAPORE — Three weeks after he was released from prison for taking upskirt videos, he was at it again.

Gary Huang Kunjie, now 36, had been sentenced multiple times for taking upskirt videos of women, usually while on upriding escalators at MRT stations.

He had undergone probation and several jail terms but this did not deter the former engineer.

Huang pleaded guilty on Friday (30 July) to nine out of 20 charges of voyeurism, with the remaining to be taken into consideration when he is sentenced on 12 August.

He admitted that he began taking upskirt photographs and videos some three weeks after his release from prison on 11 September last year.

Huang took 10 to 20 upskirt photographs and videos a day, at his own estimation, about two to three days a week. When he was arrested, the authorities found photographs and videos of 56 female victims taken at various MRT stations and shopping malls in his handphones.

On 30 December last year at Newton MRT station, Huang followed behind a 42-year-old woman who was taking an ascending escalator. After taking a quick glance behind, Huang bent slightly to move his front-facing camera under the woman’s skirt.

The incident was witnessed by a 26-year-old woman behind Huang. The younger woman shouted at him and detained him at the top of the escalator while the victim called the police. An examination of his phone revealed three videos, with one clearly capturing the woman’s buttocks.

Huang was arrested at the scene and revealed that he was seeking psychiatric treatment. He last had treatment at the Institute of Mental Health in late December and had a follow-up in January.

However, in January, he struck again while on bail. He filmed an unknown woman in the same manner on 11 January while on an upriding escalator in the Telok Ayer area. That same day, while at Buangkok MRT station, he followed closely behind another woman who was talking on the phone.

Huang thought it was a “rare opportunity” to take an upskirt photo undetected, according to the prosecution. He took his phone out to record the victim on the ascending escalator. While he was doing so, the woman turned around to check that she was not blocking anyone. She saw Huang right behind her quickly raising his phone from a low position.

The 52-year-old woman felt suspicious as there was no one else on the escalator but Huang was directly behind her.

As the woman stared at him, Huang immediately brought his handphone to his ear and began speaking on his phone, saying, “It’s already 2.30pm, why are you not here?”

This further arose the victim’s suspicions, as the time was already past 5pm. She confronted Huang who walked away. The victim later lodged a police report. Huang had captured the victim’s buttocks.

Huang filmed six other unknown women in the same manner in various areas in Singapore, including Northpoint City in Yishun.

Voyeurism carries a jail term of up to two years, or a fine, or caned, or with any combination of such punishments.
