SINGAPORE — Over a period of 14 years, a paedophile repeatedly raped or sexually assaulted all his three young biological daughters when they turned 11 or 12, a court heard.

The father, who is now 55, was on Tuesday (9 March) jailed for 33 years at the High Court.

He pleaded guilty to three charges of rape involving the two older daughters and one charge of asking the youngest daughter to have sex with him.

The two older daughters have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder while the second daughter also has depression.

Raped eldest daughter

The father worked as a cleaner and married his wife in 1993. The couple had three daughters and a son, who is now 17. The victims are now 26, 22 and 13.

In 2005, when the oldest daughter was 11, he started sexually assaulting her. "He did so after developing urges after watching pornography and forced the eldest daughter to have sex with him even though he knew that it was wrong and that she was unwilling," said Deputy Public Prosecutor Norine Tan.

On the second occasion that he abused her, the father entered the eldest daughter's room while she was lying on the bed and doing her homework.

He groped her and undressed her. The victim cried but he was undeterred and raped her.

The abuse of the eldest daughter lasted for five to six years. "The accused raped the eldest daughter on numerous occasions subsequently, before ceasing such acts sometime between 2010 and 2011," said the prosecutor.

"The eldest daughter did not tell anyone about the sexual assaults as the accused warned her against doing so and she was very scared of him," said DPP Tan.

Raped second daughter

The father sexually assaulted the second daughter when she turned 12 and around the time that he stopped assaulting the eldest daughter.

The abuse of the second daughter carried on till she was 21, and lasted between 2010 and 2019.

On one occasion in 2012, when she was 14, the father made the victim undress and lie on the living room floor before he raped her. She cried in the toilet after the assault.

"The accused subsequently raped the second daughter repeatedly (ranging from a few times a week to a few times a month) for the next seven years, till about October 2019," said DPP Tan.

The last rape took place on 19 October 2019. While the victim was in her room with the youngest daughter and her brother, the father gestured for her to go to the kitchen, where he raped her. At the time, the victim's mother was sleeping in the living room. It was the second rape of the victim on the same day.

"The second daughter did not dare to tell anyone about the sexual assaults across the many years these happened as she was scared of the accused, who was fierce to her and had warned her against doing so," said the prosecutor.

Youngest daughter made police report

On 22 October 2019, the father gestured for the youngest daughter to go over to him while she was in her room with her brother.

"The youngest daughter knew that he wanted to have sex with her as she had chanced upon him sexually assaulting the second daughter on two prior occasions and because of his previous sexual acts against her," said DPP Tan.

"As she did not want to be raped by the accused, she shook her head and started crying. The accused became angry and frustrated but did not pursue the matter further," the prosecutor added.

The next day, the youngest daughter confided in her friends at school about the matter as she did not want her father to continue to assault her. Her friends advised her to tell her teacher, who in turn brought her to a police station to make a report.

The father's crimes against all his daughters came to light after they were interviewed by the police.

A government psychiatrist later diagnosed him with paedophilic disorder with a high risk of sexual reoffending.

The prosecution had sought at least 35 years and 4 months’ jail, including a one-year jail term in lieu of caning.

"The abuse perpetrated by the accused in this case can only be described as horrific," said Deputy Chief Prosecutor Mohamed Faizal and DPP Tan in their sentencing submissions. They also noted that the two older daughters suffer permanent psychological scars.

"The sentence imposed must be proportionate to the accused’s heinous abuse of his position of trust and authority, his wanton breach of the sacred parental bonds, and to account for the enduring nature of the repeated sexual assaults that the accused perpetrated on all three of his biological daughters," they added.

The maximum punishment for rape is 20 years' jail along with a fine and caning. Only male offenders below 50 can be caned.
