A 56-year-old former civil servant who beat his 9-month-old daughter to death in 2018 was on Wednesday (28 September) jailed for 18 years by the Labuan High Court following a trial.

Maidin Ibnu Hashim committed the offence of culpable homicide not amounting to murder because he suspected the child was not his, Bernama reported. His wife is serving a jail term for a drug offence.

Maidin killed the baby sometime between 10 and 13 August 2018 in his rented house in Kampung Gersik Lama in the Federal Territory of Labuan.

A post-mortem examination showed that the victim died from severe head injury. She also had soft tissue injuries to the face, burns over the fingers and toes, and pneumonia.

Maidin was arrested on 16 August 2018 and initially faced a murder charge but this was later reduced to culpable homicide.

For his crime, Maidin could have been jailed for up to 30 years and also fined. His 18-year jail term was backdated to the date of his remand on 18 August 2018.
