Man Dies After Rescue Attempt on Yacht During Hurricane Nicole

A 68-year-old man died early on Thursday, November 10, in Cocoa, Florida, after an attempted rescue on his yacht during the peak of Hurricane Nicole, the Cocoa Police Department said.

Officers received an emergency call early on Thursday from a woman reporting her husband was in distress on their yacht, which was docked at Lee Wenner Park, police reported.

Firefighters arrived at the scene, managed to board the yacht and performed CPR on the man but the yacht broke free from the dock and started to drift.

Responders managed to secure the boat and the couple were transported to the hospital, where the man, Thomas Whittle, was pronounced dead, police said.

Hurricane Nicole made landfall along the east coast of Florida as a Category 1 hurricane early on November 10, according to the National Hurricane Center.
