Arsenal have joined Manchester City in the race to sign RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol this summer, according to reports.

The Croatia international moved to the Bundesliga club in September 2020 from Dinamo Zagreb for an initial €16m, but the centre-back remained at the Croatian outfit until the end of the season.

In just one season in the starting XI at Leipzig, Gvardiol has managed to massively increase interest in him from across Europe following a number of impressive defensive displays.

Gvardiol provided two goals and two assists in 29 league appearances last campaign, helping Leipzig to the joint-best defensive record in the Bundesliga.

He has been linked with Tottenham, Chelsea and Manchester City over the summer transfer window and now another Premier League side in Arsenal are understood to have entered the race.

French media outlet Media Foot claim that Arsenal are ‘showing an interest’ in Gvardiol who has already been ‘courted’ by Man City boss Pep Guardiola.

Arsenal are now ‘positioned’ for the transfer but have yet to make an official offer with Media Foot adding that their interest is in ‘preparation for a possible departure of William Saliba’.

The Gunners are apparently demanding €30m for Saliba with Marseille ‘dreaming’ of signing him on a permanent basis after a successful loan spell last season.

If they sold Saliba their bid to sign Gvardiol ‘could then gain momentum’ but they face strong competition from City, who are lining him up as a replacement for Nathan Ake if he leaves to join Chelsea, as rumoured.

Meanwhile, former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell reckons Kyle Walker-Peters would be a good signing for the Gunners amid rumours he could leave Southampton for £30m.

Campbell told Football Insider: “I’ve watched him play and he’s done really well at Southampton.

“He got a few opportunities at Spurs but we didn’t really see the best of him. But now he’s playing week-in, week-out – he looks like a really good addition to that Southampton squad.

“He can play left or right, he’s a good attacker and a good passer – he’s a real threat going forward.

“£30m is cheap money for an England international. He’d have to put his Spurs ties aside to come and join Arsenal – but he’s a very good player.”
