Mikel Arteta reportedly ‘knows’ that he is the ideal replacement for Pep Guardiola when he leaves Manchester City, and as such is not rushing to sign a new Arsenal contract.
Arteta has had Arsenal trending in the right direction for much of his time at the club. While it might not have been evident to start with, it certainly is now.
Indeed, in his first two seasons, the Spaniard managed two eighth-placed finishes. The following season showed the impact he had, as he inspired his side to fifth, dropping out of the top four late on.
This season, his side have massively improved upon the already positive showing from last term. At present, the Gunners are top of the Premier League table, five points clear of last season’s winner Manchester City.
Amid their top form this term, they have won all but two of their 14 league games so far.
Indeed, Arteta’s impact is now clear as day. He has his side playing attractive football, and the whole of the squad are on song and playing well as a group.
Arsenal will be keen to continue that throughout the rest of the season, and they could well finish in a very positive position.
The top job that the Gunners manager has done has not gone unnoticed.
Arteta courted for City role
Arteta has already been linked with the Barcelona job – one of the biggest managerial roles in football. While Xavi’s job is apparently safe for the time being, his position seems to have come under threat of late.
Either way, it has been reported that at some point down the line, Barca would like to have Arteta at the helm.
Clearly, the manager is doing a great job, as another European powerhouse is apparently keen on him now, too.
Spanish outlet Sport reports that the Spaniard ‘knows’ he is ‘an alternative’ to Guardiola at Man City. The pair worked together at City, as Arteta was Guardiola’s assistant prior to taking the Arsenal job.
As such, it is likely he learned a lot from the serial winner, and as such could be a perfect choice to take over from him.
If and when that is to happen remains to be seen. It is unlikely that Guardiola will be given the boot by City, given they won the league under him in four out of the last five seasons.
What’s more, the former Barcelona manager has just penned a new two-year contract extension.
Should Arteta continue to impress at Arsenal, he could be in line for the role when Guardiola does give it up. That, Sport reports, is why he is in no rush to pen a new terms himself.
He is under contract at the Emirates until 2025, which is when Guardiola’s contract at City is up. As such, the timing could be perfect for him to take over from his former mentor, should he and City want that to be the case.
