Man City crowned Premier League champions after fatal Arsenal loss to surviving Nottingham Forest
Manchester City have been confirmed as Premier League champions before they have even played this weekend after their only remaining challengers Arsenal lost to Nottingham Forest.
Man City started the current season as reigning champions, but Arsenal looked set to dethrone them after leading the way for much of the season.
However, Mikel Arteta’s side have been slipping up in recent weeks, leading to Man City taking the lead at the top of the table again.
And another flawed Arsenal result on Saturday – a 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest – has confirmed that Man City are champions for the third season in a row, and the fifth time in the past six seasons.
City – who also have the FA Cup final to look forward to – will take on Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday knowing they cannot be caught in first place, while Arsenal will finish second.
Finishing as runners up is an achievement for Arsenal, who weren’t even in the top four last season, but this season will be remembered as a case of what might have been after they led the way for so long.
Taiwo Awoniyi scored the only goal of the game at the City Ground in the 19th minute, confirming Nottingham Forest cannot be relegated in the process after their first season back in the Premier League.
Hence, going into the final week, it will be two of Leicester City, Leeds United and Everton to join Southampton in dropping down to the Championship.
