Man accused of throwing plate of rice on cleaner's back, pushing her at Quality Road Food Centre
SINGAPORE — A 44-year-old man was charged on Wednesday (5 August) with throwing a plate of rice on a cleaner’s back, then pushing her and causing her to fall at Quality Road Food Centre earlier this year.
Phua Meng Wee, a Singaporean, faces one count each of voluntarily causing hurt to and using criminal force on Ho Gek Yeow on 5 February this year between 11.02am and 11.05am.
He is said to have thrown a plate of rice on her back at the food centre at 45 Quality Road. Minutes later, he is alleged to have pushed her, causing her to fall and feel bodily pain.
The Singapore Police Force said in a press release on Tuesday that it was alerted to a case of a dispute at the food centre.
“During the dispute, the man had allegedly thrown his plate of food at the cleaner. In the ensuing altercation, the man allegedly pushed the cleaner and caused her to fall,” it added.
“(The) police have zero tolerance towards such acts of violence, and will not hesitate to take action against those who blatantly disregard the law.”
Phua’s case has been fixed for a pre-trial conference on 2 September.
If convicted of using criminal force, Phua may be jailed up to three months, or fined up to $1,500, or both. If convicted of voluntary causing hurt, he may be jailed up to three years, fined up to $5,000, or both.
