Man Accused of Dropping Child, 4, from Hotel Balcony Allegedly Said He Wanted to 'Scare Him a Little Bit'

The child was hospitalized following the July 6 incident but is now in "good health," police tell PEOPLE

A Florida man was arrested after allegedly dangling and dropping a 4-year-old child — who was not his own — off of the second floor of a Daytona Beach hotel, police say.

The man, identified as 31-year-old Brandon Gilmore, was arrested following the incident at the Sandlewood Resort on Saturday, July 6, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by PEOPLE.

Gilmore told the child’s mother that he was taking him to play and "scare him a little bit,” the affidavit alleges. He then brought the 4-year-old onto the second-story balcony, where he held the child upside down by his legs over the balcony’s edge before dropping him headfirst, the affidavit alleges.

According to the Daytona Beach Police Department, the child “suffered blunt force trauma to his head as a result of the fall,” and was hospitalized following the incident.

The child has since been released and is now in “good health,” a police spokesperson tells PEOPLE on Tuesday, July 9. “No long term health issues are expected as a result of this incident,” the spokesperson adds.

Gilmore had only met the child’s mother — who was not identified by police — about five hours before the incident, which police responded to at about 8 p.m., per the affidavit.

They met at the pool, where both Gilmore and the woman had been drinking, when she invited him to her room to “hang out,” the affidavit alleges. Police also said the pair had “talked about getting a piercing at a later time during that day," according to the affidavit.

Two eyewitnesses spoke with police, with one stating that she heard a child screaming, and turned to the balcony, where she saw the child fall. Then, she said she saw a woman come out of the hotel, pick up the child and take him back into the room.

Following the incident, Dasanni Bentley, who also claims to have witnessed the fall, told local outlet WESH that Gilmore was allegedly "just like swinging in, playing with them.”

"And then he let him go, and he had him by one foot,” she alleged. “And then the kid slipped right out of him and fell directly on his head on the concrete, no grass."

The incident was also captured on surveillance footage, which “corroborated with both witness testimonies,” the affidavit claims.

Gilmore now faces a charge of aggravated child abuse. He is being held at the Volusia County Jail.

It's not immediately clear if he has entered a plea or retained an attorney.
