4 May – After wowing everyone with her solo debut, Malaysian singer Joyce Chu is now ready to tackle the music world as part of a girl group.

The Johor-born singer, who rose to fame with the Namewee-composed "Malaysia Chabor", is among the 101 hopefuls who are currently competing in the Chinese reality show, "Chuang 2020".

If all goes well for Chu, she will be among the seven finalists who will debut as the members of a new international girl group.

She currently has 800,000 followers on Instagram and her songs, "I Miss You" and the aforementioned "Malaysia Chabor", to date have 57 million and 27 million views respectively on YouTube.

"WeTV is happy to present a Malaysian trainee, Joyce Chu, in our latest variety reality show ["Chuang 2020"]. With the latest technology available on WeTV, Malaysians will be able to cast their vote for their favorite trainee in ["Chuang 2020"]. For the first time ever, Malaysia will play a part in picking trainees into an internationally acclaimed girl band," said Lesley Simpson, the Head of Marketing and Business Development of PT TTI, in a press statement.

"During the Movement Control Order here in Malaysia, WeTV is dedicated to making the activities at home much more exciting by providing new innovative entertainment," Simpson added.

"Chuang 2020" premiered on the streaming platform WeTV last Saturday at 8pm. Consecutive episodes will air at the same time every Saturday and Sunday.

Serving as mentors on the show are Mao Buyi, who himself won a singing competition, "The Coming One" in 2017, as well as Victoria Song, Lu Han, and Huang Zitao, who all have experiences being in idol groups. The latter two debuted as members of K-pop boyband EXO in 2012 before later venturing out as solo acts in China, while Victoria debuted as part of K-pop girl group f(x) back in 2009.
