KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 25 — Take a trip down memory lane with classic pop and jazz songs of yesteryear with these charming ‘sisters’.

Asian jazz trio The Shang Sisters will be holding their first Malaysian concert at PJPac on January 7 2024, from 8pm to 10pm.

Following the release of their self-titled album in 2022, the singers will take audiences on a Nanyang Jazz Odyssey.

The show will feature the trio singing classic songs like Yolala and Nona Nona Zaman Sekarang in a spectacular presentation with dancers and a live jazz band.

Formed in 2021, The Shang Sisters consist of vocalists Janet Lee, Winnie Ho and Mian Tan.

They cover jazz and pop songs in Chinese, Malay, English and even Japanese, adding their own contemporary spin on old classics.

The trio have performed in Singapore and Hong Kong and is set to take the show to Taiwan on November 19 at the 2023 PASIWALI Festival.

Accompanied by the talented WVC Jazz Ensemble, the sisters will delight audiences young and old in a show that is guaranteed to deliver good vibes.

The concert is directed by award-winning theatre director Nell Ng of PAN Productions and composed by Malaysian jazz maestro Tay Cher Siang.

“As Malaysians, we are stronger when we are cham. Cham is what best describes The Shang Sisters’ music, it’s a mix of the best of East and West,” Tay said in a press conference yesterday.

“We want local audiences to feel like it’s a family affair between them and the trio, embracing the comfort and warmth of each of their unique charming personalities.”

Malay Mail sat down with director Ng and The Shang Sisters to tease what audiences can look forward to in the upcoming concert.

“We want them to go international, to showcase the fun and beautiful blend of our Malaysian culture,” Ng said

“In our concert overseas, we are grateful that the audiences there are more accepting of the difference and language because they are captivated by the trio’s onstage presence and vocals.”

Ng commended the members’ commitment to practise hard and consistently to make sure their vocals and performances are in peak form.

“We have a strong bond with each other as we have trained together and are honest and vulnerable with one another, this is what makes our chemistry so entertaining,” Lee said.

“On stage when our signature hair and outfits are on, we get into a groove that is really like magic, what’s important is that the audience can enjoy our banter and authenticity.

“The fact that we cover songs in Malay, English, Mandarin, Hokkien and Japanese shows the power of Malaysian ‘multilingualism’, audiences are surprised we can sing in all those languages,” Ho said.

“This is our real first concert together as a group, so we hope we can entertain Malaysians of all ages and give everyone a good time on a trip down memory lane with a fresh twist,” Tan added.

The trio are thankful to the corporate and public sectors who supported them on their journey thus far.
