Malaysian filmmaker Lau Kok Rui wins at Golden Horse Awards

21 Nov – Malaysian filmmaker Ray Lau Kok Rui is elated to win his first Golden Horse Awards for the Anthony Wong-starrer, "The Sunny Side of the Street".

The director, who won the once-in-a-lifetime accolade of Best New Director as well as Best Original Screenplay, shared that he didn't expect to be on stage to win an award.

"I never thought I could be a director in the beginning. I started by directing documentaries," he shared in his acceptance speech.

As to why the movie focuses on the Pakistani refugees, Lau, who came to Hong Kong to study and develop his arts, stated that he became empathetic towards the difficulties of life faced by Muslims in Hong Kong.

As to what he hoped for, Lau stated that he would love for the movie to be released in Malaysia so that his family and the Malaysian audience will be able to see it in theatres.

"We are still talking with the film company and distributor," he added.

As to whether he will be filming in Malaysia, Lau said that he doesn't have any specific story just yet and will need more time, but that he would love to return and make a movie in his hometown.
