KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 — Activist Saharuddin Amirullah is known on social media for donating food packages to the urban poor, especially labourers and the elderly.

One of his TikTok videos, which was posted five days ago, has gone viral with over 163,000 views and 12,700 likes.

The video shows Saharuddin reaching out to an elderly labourer in Sandakan, Sabah who was spotted on his daily2km walk home from work.

“Usually, poor workers can be seen cycling home but this uncle was walking even though he lived two kilometres away,” Saharuddin told mStar.

“He doesn’t have a bicycle because he can’t afford one. All his daughters are teenagers who aren’t old enough to work.”

Saharuddin was seen donating rice, cooking oil and eggs to the labourer before giving him a lift home, which appeared to be in a slum area.

In the car, the labourer told Saharuddin that he earns RM45 a day, which wasn’t enough for him and his family to live on.

“If I don’t work, I don’t eat. I don’t have a choice,” said the labourer, who is in his 70s.

A kind Samaritan meanwhile has agreed to donate a bicycle to him after watching Saharuddin’s videos.

“I’m grateful that a servant of Allah was generous enough to give uncle a bicycle which will be delivered before Hari Raya Haji,” said Saharuddin, who describes himself as a lifelong activist and volunteer.

“His story is a tribute to elderly fathers everywhere who continue to work and sacrifice for their family.”
