Malaysia sees 1,340 new Covid-19 infections today, Selangor tops with 441

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 20 — Malaysia kicked off the last week to Christmas with 1,340 new Covid-19 cases today.

Selangor still leads with the highest number of Covid-19 infections per state today at 441 cases, Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a statement.

However, it has not surpassed last Friday’s high of 692 infections in the state.

In second place is KL with 284 infections.

The third-highest number of cases per state is Sabah, with 196 infections.

Malaysia’s overall cases to date stands at 93,309, though the number of patients currently receiving treatment is 15,563.

Selangor, KL and Sabah account for 32.9 per cent, 21.2 per cent and 14.6 per cent of today’s cases overall.

Dr Noor Hisham also announced four new Covid-19 deaths today, bringing the total number of fatalities to 437 cases or 0.47 per cent of all total cases.

The first death is a 63-year old Malaysian man in Selangor with a medical history of diabetes, high-blood pressure, heart diseases, stroke and obesity.

The second is a 67-year old Malaysian man in Penang with a medical history of high-blood pressure.

“The third death is a 78-year old Malaysian man in Sabah with a medical history of high-blood pressure and heart disease.

“Lastly, the fourth is a 77-year old foreign man in Sabah, whose medical history is unknown,” Dr Noor Hisham said.

Currently, 116 patients are under intensive care, and 57 require breathing assistance.

Dr Noor Hisham also said three of today’s new Covid-19 patients were infected while abroad and the remaining 1,337 people contracted the virus domestically.

He said 134 cases today or 10 per cent are related to the clusters in prisons and Immigration detention depots.

These include the Penjara Jalan Harapan cluster with 58 cases, the Tembok Gajah cluster with 56 cases, the Tembok cluster with 10 cases, the Penjara Seberang Perai cluster with eight cases and the Penjara Kepayan cluster with two cases.

The Health Ministry recorded 1,067 recoveries from Covid-19 today, bringing the total number of recoveries to 77,309 cases or 82.9 per cent of all total cases.
