Malaysia reports 160 more Covid-19 deaths in the past 24 hours

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1 — A total of 160 more Covid-19 related deaths were reported in the past 24 hours, a day after the expiration of the six-month period of Emergency.

A tweet by the Ministry of Health (MOH) revealed the new figures brought the cumulative death toll to 9,184 deaths, with a fatality rate of 0.81 per cent.

MOH’s tweet also revealed that there are 1,059 Covid-19 patients currently warded in intensive care units (ICUs) nationwide, with more than half, or 531 of them requiring breathing assistance.

Malaysia today reported 17,150 new Covid-19 infections, with the total number of confirmed infections now at 1,130,422.

MOH director general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in his statement later revealed the majority of deaths were reported in Klang Valley, with 55 fatalities in Selangor and 25 in Kuala Lumpur.

Out of the 160 deaths reported today, Dr Noor Hisham said 20 were of patients already brought in dead, nine of which were again from the Klang Valley.

A breakdown of today’s deaths by state showed Negri Sembilan and Johor both reported 14 fatalities, Melaka and Kedah each with 10 deaths, Pahang with eight, Sabah with seven, Penang with six deaths, Perak and Kelantan with four deaths each, and Terengganu with three deaths.

Dr Noor Hisham said 140 deaths reported today involved Malaysians with 20 involving non-locals, and that the majority, or 133 patients from the 160 perished suffered from underlying conditions and co-morbidities.

During the six-month period of Emergency spanning from January 11 and July 31, a total of 1,004,157 new Covid-19 cases were reported.

Over the same period, a total of 8,469 Covid-19 related deaths were also reported.

For the record, on the first day of the Emergency on January 11, Malaysia reported 1,006 new infections, with the cumulative case count then at 109,115 confirmed infections.

On the same date, there were only a total of 555 Covid-19 deaths reported to that point, with four deaths reported that day.
