Madrid restaurants hit by Omicron cancelations

The Omicron variant's lightning-fast spread through Europe has sent Spain's infection rate spiraling to record highs and decimated reservations.

The 14-day infection rate was at a record 1,775 cases per 100,000 people on Thursday (December 30), more than eight times that registered a month earlier and up from 890 during the previous peak in late January 2021.

Miguel Campos, the chef at restaurant Asador Extremeno, said the variant "has influenced our clients who had booked in advance. They have called us to cancel because of the new variant, there are many people who did not have the confidence to come, so it has affected us a lot."
