KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 11 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has today backed the corruption investigation against Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Suggesting that there may be truth in the allegations against the Perikatan Nasional chairman, Anwar said the issue would not have been played up by the opposition pact if it were untrue.

“Whether or not it is malicious wait for the report.

“I don’t think this issue would have been played up if it is untrue, there is some truth to it,” Anwar told reporters here after officiating the Housewife Social Security Scheme and MyFutureJobs 2023 Career Carnival.

Anwar was responding to a media inquiry on whether the allegations were malicious, as said by Muhyiddin when the latter denied being linked to a contract said to have been awarded to his son-in-law.

"How far he is involved I don't know. That depends on the investigation. Our point is we want to stop anyone who becomes prime minister, finance minister or ministers after this, don't treat this as a place they can use to enrich their children and in-laws.

"That's the lesson," Anwar said.

Several days ago, reports emerged that Muhyiddin was involved in the awarding of the National Integrated Immigration System (NIISe) contract to Iris Corporation Berhad, linked to his son-in-law.

The company in question is IRIS Corp Bhd’s unit, Iris Information Technology Systems Sdn Bhd (IITS) which secured a RM1.12 billion contract for the NIISe project from the Home Affairs Ministry in May 2022.

NIISe was meant to modernise the Immigration Department of Malaysia by implementing the latest and most advanced digital applications.

Muhyiddin then released a statement to Bernama where he denied his involvement in the awarding of the project, claiming the allegations were malicious slander deliberately designed to tarnish his and his family’s dignity.

Utusan Malaysia then quoted an anonymous MACC source confirming that an investigation has been started against "a former prime minister".
