Home Alone was directed by Chris Columbus and written by John Hughes. The film also starred Joe Pesci, Catherine O'Hara, Daniel Stern and John Heard.
Culkin's performance as Kevin earned him a Golden Globe nomination. He reprised the character in 1992's Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.
Just last December, Culkin — who is also known for roles in My Girl, Saved!, Party Monster and American Horror Story (among others) — reunited with his Home Alone onscreen mom O'Hara, 70, as he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in celebration of his 40 years in the industry.
"Home Alone was, is and always will be a beloved global sensation," O'Hara said in her speech. "The reason families all over the world can't let a year go by without watching and loving Home Alone together is because of Macaulay Culkin."
O'Hara added that Culkin gave a "perfect performance" as Kevin. "I know you worked really hard, I know you did, but you made acting look like the most natural thing in the world to do," she said.
She went on to praise Culkin for bringing a "sweet and twisted, yet totally relatable" sense of humor to every project he does. "It's a sign of intelligence in a child and a key to survival at any age," said the actress.
"Macaulay, congratulations. You so deserve your star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. And thank you for including me, your fake mom who left you home alone not once but twice, to share in this happy occasion. I'm so proud of you," O'Hara concluded.

As for Culkin, he ended his speech by quoting one of Home Alone's most infamous lines.
"To wrap things up, and in the spirit of the holiday season, I just wanna say Merry Christmas, ya filthy animals," he said.
