Lynda Carter's Children: All About Her Son James and Daughter Jessica
Lynda Carter is a mom to two kids, James and Jessica
Lynda Carter is just as much a Wonder Woman to her two kids — James Altman and Jessica Carter Altman — as she is to the rest of the world.
The actress, famous for her portrayal of Marvel’s Diana Prince a.k.a. Wonder Woman, became a mom for the first time in 1988 when she welcomed her son James. She completed her family in 1990 with the addition of daughter Jessica.
Carter welcomed both of her kids with her longtime husband Robert A. Altman, whom she married in 1984. Though her career was on the rise, the pair chose to leave Los Angeles for the suburbs of Washington, D.C.
“I spent a lot of time on movie sets... but I didn’t have a lot of substance in my life,” she told PEOPLE in 2017.
Carter finally found fulfillment in her family. “It’s always the people in your life — the friends and family that you choose to spend time with," she continued. "It is every step you take that is the more difficult step in taking care of your children.”
“I think that the intellectual pursuits in our family were much more the focus of our lives,” she added. “It was never the stuff or the presents; it’s the accomplishments and the sense of accomplishments in our lives.”
One of Carter’s major accomplishments came when she received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2018 — with both of her children and her husband by her side. “I can’t begin to describe how proud I am of my mom,” Jessica shared on Instagram at the time. “For what she has accomplished and for who she is. She is remarkable. Congratulations on your star ⭐️ it’s about time.”
Sadly, Robert died suddenly in 2021 of a rare blood cancer. Though the experience was heartbreaking, it brought the family even closer.
“We have always been grateful for the two beautiful lives we created together: our children, Jessica and James,” Carter wrote on Instagram after Robert's death. “They are the lights of my life, and were the greatest joy of Robert’s. I see so much of Robert in them, and I know he lives on through them.”
Carter told PEOPLE in February 2024 that she and her kids keep Robert close to their hearts. “They also had a wonderful relationship with him, and we talk about him all the time," she said.
Here's everything to know about Lynda Carter's children: James and Jessica.
James Altman, 36
Carter and Robert became parents for the first time on Jan. 14, 1988, with the birth of their son, James Altman. The couple tried to give their son a somewhat normal childhood despite Carter’s fame and Robert’s success in the realm of law and videogames. James grew up in the outskirts of Washington, D.C.
James attended the University of Michigan, where he graduated with a B.A. in History in 2010, before going on to receive his Juris Doctor degree from the George Washington University Law School in 2014. He followed directly in his father’s footsteps, and even went on to join the company he founded, ZeniMax Media — the parent holding company for Bethesda Softworks.
James now works as the Director of Publishing Operations at Bethesda Softworks, according to his LinkedIn. In March 2021, the company was acquired by Microsoft in a massive deal, and James showed love to his dad on social media to mark the special occasion.
“Dad worked for over 20 years to get us to this point, and should have been here today,” James wrote on Instagram at the time. “He would have been so proud of what our team has accomplished. Raising a glass of champagne today, and toasting to him… Excited for our future at Microsoft!”
James also served as the executive producer of Prime’s Fallout series, based on the Bethesda Softworks video game. The project was released in April 2024. “What an amazing ride this has been,” James wrote on Instagram. “Could not be more thankful to our entire cast and crew on bringing FALLOUT to life.”
Carter was extremely proud of her son for his accomplishment, and even joined him on the red carpet to celebrate the premiere. “You may be that bold and amazing executive producer on the red carpet, but you’ll always be my first baby, James,” she wrote on Instagram on April 5. “Can’t wait to watch @falloutonprime.”
James is equally proud of his mother. When she received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, he shared a family photo on Instagram with the caption, “Congratulations to my WONDERFUL mother on this long overdue honor.”
Jessica Carter Altman, 33
Carter and Robert completed their family on Oct. 7, 1990, with the birth of their daughter, Jessica Carter Altman. Like her father and brother, Jessica received her doctorate in law in 2017. “Another Juris Doctor in the family 💙💛,” she wrote on Instagram that year, sharing a family photo after graduating from the University of Michigan.
However, Carter’s lookalike daughter quickly decided to change gears to focus on her real passion: making music.
“I grew up performing,” Jessica told The Morning Wrap in February 2024. “When I was in law school, my mom actually invited me to perform with her in D.C. at the Kennedy Center… and that was it. All of a sudden, the thing that I had been pushing down for so long wanting to do, I knew then that I would finish law school and be a musician. It was just a matter of when.”
In June 2024, Jessica released her first album. “My debut album, #AFTERMATH, is available NOW,” she shared on Instagram at time, alongside an image of the album's cover. “Every song is deeply personal. Thank you to my amazing team for making this possible. I hope you enjoy every bit of my heart poured into this album ❤️.”
Jessica often performs with her mom. “Can't wait to be back on stage with my momma!” she wrote on Instagram in 2017. The pair even planned to tour together in 2020, but they had to cancel the tour due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I always have to remind myself that my baby girl is hardly a baby anymore,” Carter wrote of Jessica on her Instagram in 2020. “Our tour may be postponed for now, but I wanted to share some photos from the shoot @jessica.carter.altman and I did recently.”
Carter was also super proud of her daughter when she got married to Dr. Ross Uhrich in May 2023, and planned the whole thing herself. “She planned it, chose everything and did everything,” Carter told Brides.
Carter was especially touched by the ways her daughter honored her late dad. “She sewed a piece of one of his shirts into the fabric on the inside of her wedding dress, and I put a little tiny piece of the same shirt inside my dress,” the actress told the outlet. “There were so many small things that she did.”
Jessica also paid tribute to her father with the music video for her song “Cherry Blossoms,” released in 2022. " 'Cherry Blossoms' is about being lost in and transported by your memories,” she told PEOPLE that year. “I think we all have moments when something in our present reminds us of another time and place. For me, cherry blossoms blooming in the spring always remind me of my dad."
Jessica said at the time that she was struggling with feelings of grief, and turned to songwriting to help ease that after her dad’s death. "I often found myself clinging to happy memories and moments I shared with my dad. This song was born from that,” she told PEOPLE.
She also leans on her mom, with whom she loves to spend time. They pair have been spotted traveling together, enjoying “relaxing weekends” and even visiting Paris Fashion Week together in January 2024.
Jessica often sends sweet birthday messages to her mom on social media. “Happy birthday to the woman who makes everything seem like magic,” she wrote on Instagram in 2020.
