"The role is yours," the singer responded
On Monday, the Oscar winner, 40, shared a video of herself on Instagram leaning against a door as she danced to Monáe's song "Lipstick Lover" from her recent album The Age of Pleasure.
"My official audition to be @JanelleMonae’s next #lipsticklover 😘💄," Nyong'o wrote in the caption.
Monáe responded to in the comment section to jokingly share that the Us actress won the part. "A leading lady💄👄🥰😘 the role is YOURS😍💄💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋," Monáe, 37, wrote.
"This world is still extremely new to me and unbelievable,” she recalled of meeting the singer to Rolling Stone back in May. "[Janelle] came up to me and just gave me the realest hug. I think we may have swayed to the music. She was just like, ‘I’m so proud of you, and just thank you for being you.’ ”
"At some point, [Janelle] asked me for my phone, put her number in and said, ‘Let’s stay in touch,' " Nyong'o recalled. "She was like, ‘I really mean it. If you need anything, I’m here for you.’ ”
As Nyong'o spoke about Monáe with Rolling Stone in May ahead of Monáe's latest album, she also addressed a past rumor that the pair were once romantic with each other.

“She has magnetism that they were obviously picking up on. She is that enigmatic,” Nyong’o said of Monáe at the time. "People are curious about enigmatic people. I was not surprised. And I don’t mind being associated with her in any capacity.”
Nyong'o shared last month that she broke up with her boyfriend Selema Masekela, writing in an Instagram post that she felt it necessary to "publicly dissociate myself from someone I can no longer trust."
Though Nyong'o is typically quiet about her private life, she has opened up to her social media followers a number of times since she announced her breakup.
In addition to adopting a cat, Nyong'o recently shared kind words about her friend Palmer Hefferan, whom she wrote "flew in swiftly to be by my side and help me through the hardest days as I adjusted to my new reality," in a Nov. 2 Instagram post.
