Warning: This article contains major spoilers for The Luminaries finale
The Luminaries aired its finale on Sunday night (July 19) and it seems the majority of viewers are glad it's over.
Based on the bestselling novel by Eleanor Catton, the series followed the trial of Anna Wetherell (Eve Hewson) as she fought to clear her name after the murder of Crosbie Wells (Ewen Leslie), while also navigating an eerie entanglement with love interest Emery Staines (Himesh Patel).
The finale saw Anna exonerated of all charges, while Emery was sentenced to nine months hard labour — though it's implied the pair will be reunited in the future.
And, while some viewers enjoyed the finale, it seems that for the majority, The Luminaries failed to deliver in a lot of ways.
Deemed a "ridiculous final episode" and a "muddled load of poorly acted and produced tosh" by some viewers, it seems people were left underwhelmed and confused after The Luminaries final episode.
So much so, that a number of viewers wished they'd abandoned the series earlier on.
"Thank goodness, it’s over!" Said one viewer.
"Really wish I'd not invested so much time in this," added another.
"Wish I'd abandoned after week 1, still have no idea what was going on!" Said another.
Below are a few more of their reactions:
Well at least I can claim my Sunday evening's back now! Wish I'd abandoned after week 1, still have no idea what was going on! #Luminaries— Denise J (@DeniseJGem) July 19, 2020

So....when about to abandon #Luminaries after just 3 boring unfathomable episodes those who had seen it all urged me to persevere as “it gets better” - it didnt. Ridiculous final episode. Just my humble opinion. 😕— Gordon Burns (@mrgordonburns) July 19, 2020
I stuck with the #Luminaries - it was a muddled load of poorly acted and produced tosh for five weeks, and ended with a melodramatic load of tosh. Oh well 😔— Dave Love (@Stegglesaurus) July 19, 2020
While The Luminaries ending could open doors for season 2, it doesn't seem the audience is there to warrant one.
Better luck with Normal People, we reckon.
The Luminaries aired on BBC One and is available on BBC iPlayer. It's also available to order on DVD.
