If any sort of winner has emerged over the course of the last year, it's loungewear. Its star was already on the rise before a pandemic and country-wide WFH orders rendered all forms of conventional office attire immediately obsolete. But 2020 was the year loungewear's ascension reached its logical apotheosis, as it effortlessly asserted its dominance over less-comfortable alternatives—i.e. everything else in your closet—singlehandedly propping up a battered retail industry in the process.
If you, too, have resigned yourself to another year of glancing at the clothing hanging mournfully in your closet and then positively melting, like so much butter in a hot pan, into yet another set of matching sweats, there's no better time to replenish your supply than right now. Because more brands than ever are serving up blanket-soft loungewear of all kinds, and the days before New Year's are the perfect time to remind yourself why you won't be going back to wearing any, ahem, less-forgiving clothing once the holidays are over.
At this point, am I long since sick of wearing it all? Yes. Do I still end up throwing on the cleanest sweatshirt/sweatpant combination within reach after feeling my resolve dissipate in the face of so much blissful comfort each morning? Also, yes. Sometimes you've got to give the people what they want. And right now, what the people want—what they're for clamoring like they're Stones fans just waiting for Jagger to cue up "Gimme Shelter"—is the soft, comforting embrace of fleece-lined everything. Because what pairs better with some loungewear than...more loungewear? Why yes, I will have some sweats with my sweats. Thank you, sir!
