‘Lots of clubs’ want Ings as Aston Villa ‘reject’ Everton offer with Lampard desperate for recruits
Everton have had a bid to sign Aston Villa striker Danny Ings on loan rejected, according to Daily Mail correspondent Dominic King.
Ings previously played for Everton’s Merseyside rivals, Liverpool, before he joined Southampton for around £22million in 2019.
The 30-year-old enjoyed a terrific spell on the south coast before a £30m move to Villa Park came out of nowhere in August 2021.
His time with the Villans has not been a roaring success and he is already playing under his third manager in the Midlands following Unai Emery’s recent appointment.
Ings has only started one Premier League match since Emery replaced Steven Gerrard in October.
He came off the bench in Emery’s first game before netting a brace in Villa’s comeback win against in-form Brighton – his only start under the Spanish head coach which was the final match before the World Cup.
Ings was rewarded with a four-minute cameo against his former club Liverpool in the Villans’ next game and then came on in the 82nd minute in Sunday’s win at Tottenham.
Although it is early days in the Emery era, it does look like he is not a huge fan of the 30-year-old three-cap England international.
This could perhaps open the door for a January exit. A move this month did not look like it was on the cards, however, it has been claimed that struggling Everton are keen on signing Ings.
According to Dominic King, the Toffees have made a bid to sign Ings on loan until the end of the season.
Villa have rejected this offer, and will only let Ings leave on a permanent basis, the Daily Mail correspondent adds.
It is said that there are ‘a number of other clubs’ keen on signing the striker and the situation is one ‘to watch’.
Everton are in dire need of recruits this month as they face yet another relegation battle under Frank Lampard.
Whether or not Lampard will be in the job until the end of 2022-23 remains to be seen. He is under a great amount of pressure after Tuesday’s 4-1 home defeat to Brighton.
The former Chelsea manager had Richarlison at his disposal last term but does not this time around, which could be fatal in the club’s bid to remain in the top flight.
Richarlison was sold for around £50m to Tottenham last summer and Lampard brought in a couple of new faces to fill that void.
Neal Maupay and Dwight McNeil joined from Brighton and Burnley, respectively, but have both failed to make an impact.
Scoring goals is Everton’s biggest issue this season and they are clearly missing Richarlison, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin either injured or struggling in front of goal when fit.
16th-placed Everton have only scored 14 league goals in 2022-23, with three of the four sides (West Ham, Nottm Forest, Wolves) below them the only teams with less goals, and they all have a game in hand.
With 17th to 20th all in action on Wednesday evening, the Toffees could end the night in the relegation zone.
Ings would be a superb signing, despite the fact he has not been on the top of his game since leaving Southampton for Villa.
The experienced striker has five goals in 16 top flight encounters this season and it is not clear how much the Villans would be willing to sell him for.
