Los Angeles shaken by magnitude 4.7 earthquake

Houses were shaken across Los Angeles after being hit with a 4.7 magnitude earthquake.

The quake occurred just before 2pm on Friday, in the wake of intense storms that have battered the city and the entire west coast. The effects lasted for several seconds causing some buildings across the city to move violently.

The epicentre was located at 6.21 miles of Malibu, California, and was later downgraded to a 4.5 magnitude quake.

The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) warned the public to prepare for immediate after shocks. “If Inside When Shaking Starts: DROP, COVER, HOLD ON!” the force wrote on X.

“Protect Your Head + Neck While Taking Cover Under Sturdy Furniture or Near a Sturdy Interior Wall, Away From Windows and Doorways Until Shaking Stops.”

The National Weather Service (NWS) later reported that there was no danger of a tsunami from the quake.

Over the past week LA has seen over 500 mudslides and heavy flash flooding brought on by two atmospheric weather systems, which have caused major destruction across the state of California.

The earthquake also comes shortly after magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck the world’s largest active volcano in Hawaii earlier on Friday.

Items were off shelves in nearby towns but not immediately prompting reports of serious damage after the incident, which hit — Mauna Loa on the Big Island of Hawaii knocking . No tsunami was expected, authorities said.

The earthquake, which the U.S. Geological Survey initially reported as magnitude 6.3, was centered on Mauna Loa’s southern flank at a depth of 23 miles (37 kilometers), 1.3 miles (2 kilometers) southwest of Pahala.
