Londoner living in France hopes wildfires will ease

STORY: Save for a few bikini-clad holidaymakers, Arcachon's beach had been stripped of tourists, while some watched the smoke from the fires rising behind the town.

Wildfires continued to burn on Tuesday (July 19) in the Gironde area of southwestern France, where 34,000 people have been evacuated.

Some 2,000 firefighters supported by water-bombing aircraft were fighting the blazes, which started a week ago and have burned around 19,300 hectares (47,700 acres).
