'Loki': The biggest reveals and talking points from Episode 2

Our second helping of Loki on Disney+ gives us more of what we liked in the series premiere, while revealing a little more of the world our variant(s) inhabit.
The full picture of what exactly the Loki(‘s) are up to may still be elusive, but there’s still a lot to dive into here.
Let’s get into it!
Loki, TVA consultant
I mentioned this last week, but it’s worth repeating: Owen Wilson and Tom Hiddleston make a great buddy-cop duo. This is arguably an even more “talky-talky-talky” episode than the premiere, but it’s just delightful to see Loki and Mobius chat about everything from jet skis to free will. Sometimes they get on each other’s nerves, but you get the sense that they genuinely enjoy each other’s company. It’s definitely the most excited that Mobius – who has seemingly been content to live out his life as a small cog in TVA’s wheel – has been in a while.
In this hour, our favourite twosome are on the trail of the variant Loki we glimpsed at the end of premiere. We also get a little more info: there are a lot of Loki variants with different power sets that the TVA have “pruned” over the years, but for some reason this latest model has proven particularly hard to pin down. After a bit of time spent in the TVA’s vast library, Loki figures out where the other version of him is.
Apocalypse(s) Now
The answer, a delighted Loki reveals, is that this Loki variant has been hiding out in zero variance energy apocalypses. After a bit of cajoling (“If you don’t trust me, you can trust one thing. I love to be right.”), Mobius agrees to test his theory by jumping back to Pompeii on the day of its destruction in 79 A.D. Hiddleston makes Loki’s unabashed glee in the face of death and destruction fun to watch, while also impressively delivering a soliloquy in Latin.
It turns out that our trickster is indeed correct, and after some more sleuthing it’s determined that our variant is hiding out in the future apocalypse of 2050, where a hurricane ravages Earth. With Hunter B-15 and some Minutemen in tow, a disaster shelter in Alabama is the next stop on the hunt.
Enter Lady Loki
Up until this point, Loki’s second hour had been intriguing but straightforward. This is where things get interesting. Instead of introducing herself in the flesh, our Loki variant chooses to enchant others so she can talk through them instead. It’s the first major difference in the power sets between Loki’s, with more undoubtedly to come.
Eventually Sophia Di Martino’s Lady Loki reveals herself with a telling line – “This isn’t about you.” After a discombobulated start in the premiere, Loki has worked hard to gain some measure of understanding, if not control of proceedings. But this revelation, just as Lady Loki bombs the Sacred Timeline, wrong-foots him just as much as it does the audience. If knowledge is power, then it feels like Lady Loki is in the driver’s seat as episode two comes to a close.
There’s lots of questions the last few minutes of this episode leaves us with. Chiefly, where did the Loki’s go and what’s going to happen with the TVA now that the Sacred Timeline is under threat thanks to Lady Loki (that shot of Renslayer grabbing her time stick and preparing for battle was especially exciting). We’ll have to wait until next week for the answers.
More low key observations
Lady Loki tortured the information about the Time Keepers’ location from Hunter C-20 (Sasha Lane). If she doesn’t want to rule the Time Variance Authority, like our Loki wants to, what does she want with them?
Ravonna Renslayer has one of the coolest offices in the MCU! More importantly, I love her repartee with Mobius. Here’s hoping we get more scenes with them in future.
Between the He-Man trailer, the Guardians of the Galaxy game trailer, and now Loki, I’m hearing ‘Holding out for a hero’ a lot lately. Somewhere, Bonnie Tyler is enjoying her royalty cheques.
Nothing has made me more sympathetic to Loki than the fact that there was apparently no candy on Asgard. (In related news, I want some Kablooie.)
