LOCAL COMMANDER AMONG 12 MILITANTS KILLED IN N. AFGHANISTAN

MAZAR-E-SHARIF, Afghanistan, March 21 (Bernama) -- At least 12 insurgents including a Taliban local commander were killed in a counter-attack from Afghan forces in northern Balkh province on Saturday, army spokesman in the northern region Mohammed Hanif Rezai said, China’s Xinhua News Agency reported.

A group of armed Taliban fighters stormed security checkpoints in Dawlat Abad district of the province early morning and the soldiers on duty returned fire, killing 12 militants including district commander Mullah Hamidullah alias Sadis on the spot, the official said.

Five more insurgents including the group commander Mawlawi Noor Mohammad were wounded in the fighting which lasted for a couple of hours, Rezai said.

There were no casualties on the security personnel, the official added.

The Taliban militants have intensified activities since the start of Afghan New Year or Nawroz which begun on March 20.

The militant outfit has not yet commented on the incident.
