2020 was meant to be the year of nostalgia TV. As well as Mulan getting a live-action remake, a Lizzie Maguire reboot was officially in the works, and the only person more excited about it than us was Hilary Duff.

The actress took to Instagram multiple times to tease the upcoming Disney+ programme, first announcing the news in August 2019 with a caption which read, "SURPRISE!!! I’ve been trying to contain this excitement for a loooong time while this has been in the works! I am beyond excited to be home again, back with my girl ♥️...and into her 30’s."

Since then, Hilary revealed that many of the original cast would be returning, including Jake Thomas as her brother Matt, Hallie Todd as her mum Jo and Robert Carradine as dad Sam, as well as Adam Lamberg as sidekick Gordo.

But despite fans going WILD over the reboot, and production already starting, Variety reported the show had been put on hold, and the original series creator Terri Minsky had stepped down from the series as a result. A Disney spokesperson confirmed the news:

"Fans have a sentimental attachment to Lizzie McGuire and high expectations for a new series. After filming two episodes, we concluded that we need to move in a different creative direction and are putting a new lens on the show."

The new series was tipped to follow McGuire as a 30-year-old navigating her life in New York City, and while it's not not happening now, we're not happy to hear it's been delayed.

And it doesn't sound like Hilary is either, after she took to Instagram Stories to throw a bit of shade at Disney+ for also putting Love, Simon on hold. "Sounds familiar," the actress wrote, alongside a screenshot which claimed the show had been pulled for not being 'family-friendly'.

Sources told Variety that the streaming service "felt many issues explored on the show Love, Simon, including alcohol use and sexual exploration, would not fit in with the family-friendly content on Disney Plus."
