A “Lizzie McGuire” Baby and No Love for Gordo? Disney Writer Dishes on What Might Have Been in Nixed Reboot

Writer Jonathan Hurwitz revealed what fans would have likely seen on the would-be series, including Lizzie hooking up with her teenage crush

Calling all Lizzie McGuire fans!

Jonathan Hurwitz, a writer on the nixed reboot of the hit Disney Channel series, is revealing what Lizzie (Hilary Duff) and her friends would have been up to in the Disney+ series that ultimately got scrapped.

“We wrote and shot the first two episodes,” he explained of the series, which Duff, 36, announced would not move forward in December 2022, on TikTok. “Basically, it starts in New York. Lizzie has been working and living there as an interior designer and she's dating this very, very handsome chef.”

However, in the first episode, Hurwitz said Lizzie discovers all is not as it seems in the Big Apple.

"She ends up finding that he's been cheating on her with her best friend and so she, at the end of the pilot, goes home to California to the home we all saw on the original show," he explained. “She’s in her childhood bedroom where little animated Lizzie has been waiting for her."

Hurwitz also responded to a fan comment which questioned if Lizzie and her best friend David "Gordo" Gordon (Adam Lamberg) were “end game.” He shared, “You would have got an answer in episode two.”

As fans may remember, Lizzie and Gordo, alongside Miranda Sanchez (Lalaine), were best friends throughout their teenage years for the two seasons that Lizzie McGuire aired on Disney Channel between 2001 and 2004.

In The Lizzie McGuire Movie, the 2003 theatrical film ended with Lizzie and Gordo sharing a kiss atop their Italian hotel after her adventures in Rome. However, fans never saw what came of that romantic moment since no other Lizzie-related projects followed.

According to Hurwitz, in the reboot, "Lizzie meets up with Gordo — who she's just kind of been in touch with via text over the years occasionally — and they meet up and Gordo reveals that he is engaged to a woman and she's pregnant and they're really happy. So no, in this version, Lizzie and Gordo wouldn’t have ended up together."

“And episode two ends with Lizzie getting a text from Ethan Craft (Clayton Snyder) — and little animated Lizzie faints," he revealed, referencing Lizzie's longtime teenage crush.

The writer also dished on the third episode in the would-be series, which was not filmed but the script had been completed.

Of the plot, he noted, “Lizzie wakes up in Ethan’s bed in his water polo t-shirt and animated Lizzie pops up and she has this little checklist — like a to-do list — and Ethan is on the list. And she checks it off and I think she says something like, 'Well, check that box.' Dramatic pause, 'Twice!'"

Hurwitz also responded to another comment asking if there were certain storylines that Disney wasn’t “comfortable” with in the reboot. He alleged, “That moment was probably one of them.”

Duff previously opened up about the proposed premise of the reboot in a 2022 interview with Cosmopolitan.

"My character was moving back home with her parents because she caught her soon-to-be fiancé cheating on her," she told the magazine. "She was falling flat on her face at the moment and being like, 'I need to pivot because everything that I thought was wasn't, and I'm turning 30. What the f---?'"

During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen in January 2023, the actress and singer said she'd still be up for revisiting the early 2000s hit show if it aligned with her desire to portray a more adult Lizzie following the nixed reboot.

"Disney+ was very new," she told host Andy Cohen on WWHL, taking a moment to gather her thoughts as she explained to Cohen what had initially happened with the first round of plans. "And I think they were figuring out their ..." she said, trailing off, "and we were figuring out our ..."
