Liza Soberano is confirmed to be leaving "Darna"

9 Apr – After nearly two years since she was announced to be the new Darna, Liza Soberano recently revealed that she will not be playing the female superhero after all.

As reported on Manila Times, ABS-CBN and Star Cinema recently confirmed the news, saying that they have accepted the actress' decision to withdraw from the project, following a previous injury.

"Liza suffered a finger bone fracture while doing a fight scene on the set of 'Bagani' last year. She is still undergoing treatment and recovering from the trauma. Unfortunately, after consultation with her doctors, it was deemed best for Liza not to pursue the project as the injury shall hamper her from effectively doing the movie stunts required. ABS-CBN and Star Cinema understand Liza's condition, respect her decision, and wish her well on her recovery.

"Meanwhile, the preparation for the Darna movie continues as ABS-CBN and Star Cinema remain fully committed in telling the well-loved story of the Filipina superheroine and have started the selection process for the new actress who will bring the iconic character to life on the big screen."

previously expressed her sadness over having to leave the project, especially after preparing herself for the past two years training for the role.

is the latest hindrance that has befallen the project, which was first announced in 2013. Its first choice Angel Locsin had to withdraw from the project due to an aggravated spinal injury, which caused the project to be delayed for nearly two years.

Locsin's confirmation that she still couldn't do the project despite having had surgery and rehabilitation, Star Cinema cast young star Liza Soberano in the role, and the project went on another hiatus while the new Darna underwent her training.

In May last year, its director Erik Matti left the project due to creative differences, and was replaced by "Heneral Luna" director Jerrold Tarog, who then postponed the production yet again in order to revise the script and make several changes to the project.
