Liverpool are reportedly eyeing a top Serie A forward who ripped England to pieces when playing for Italy in the Euro 2020 final, although he will likely cost them £52million.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has seemingly started a rebuild of his squad, given Liverpool’s sluggish performances this season and their struggles domestically, with another of Europe’s top stars linked with a switch to Anfield.

Cody Gapko has already arrived from PSV this month, and although the Netherlands star has not exactly hit the ground running, he still remains a quality addition to Klopp’s ranks.

And with Mo Salah not being at his magnificent best so far this season, Klopp is also said to be looking at potential alternatives to the Reds’ talisman.

Juventus winger Federico Chiesa is the player in question, having excelled in Turin since his initial loan move in October 2020.

The 25-year-old scored 34 goals and added 25 assists in 153 games for Fiorentina before eventually joining Juve permanently in the summer of 2021.

He now has 35 goal involvements in 69 appearances for the Old Lady, which includes him netting 19 times.

The Italy international has previously been hailed as a ‘phenomenon’, ultimately leading to links with Liverpool.

And now Calciomercato states that Klopp is interested in striking a deal for the player, having been unimpressed with Salah this season.

However, Chiesa will not come cheap, with a fee of around €60million (£52m) being mooted.

Chiesa back in action after injury lay off

Having missed the first few months of the season with injury issues, the attacker is still feeling his way into the current campaign and has scored once and added two assists in eight appearances so far.

He really made his mark on the international stage at Euro 2020, scoring twice in the tournament Italy won after beating England in the final.

He was one of their star performers at Wembley. Indeed, he caused the Three Lions all sorts of problems with his pace, trickery and clever movement.

It’s also claimed that Liverpool had an £86m offer rejected for the attacker back in 2021, so Klopp is clearly a massive fan.

Talk of Chiesa replacing Salah seems a little premature at this stage though.

The Egyptian has only scored once in his last six league outings, but he still remains Liverpool’s chief threat.

If anything, Chiesa could play alongside Salah, with either Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota or Gakpo added to that mix.

That would once again give Klopp the triple threat he has been missing since Sadio Mane’s exit last summer.

Liverpool are back in action on Sunday when they head to Brighton in the FA Cup.
