Liverpool do not want to sell Roberto Firmino this summer amid reports that Juventus could make a bid for the Brazilian.
The 30-year-old has been a key part of Jurgen Klopp’s success at Anfield with Firmino forming a deadly attacking trio with Mo Salah and Sadio Mane.
Mane has now left the club, joining Bayern Munich this summer, but the other two remain and the Reds look well set for the new season after adding Darwin Nunez to their squad.
Speaking ahead of their Champions League final loss to Real Madrid last season, Firmino said on his future: “I want to stay.
“I’m very happy here. I’m grateful to God to be here playing at a great club with great players, winning titles, and my wish is to stay. I want to be here, I’m happy here, and that’s all I can say—I want to stay.”
A report on Monday claimed that Juventus have made a £20m bid for Firmino which looks like a tempting offer on paper with the Brazilian now 30 and in the last year of his contract at Anfield.
Salah, Firmino, Nunez, Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and new signing Fabio Carvalho are all options in attack for Liverpool this season and there could be a school of thought that they can do without one of those players.
However, that is not the case for the Reds, with Goal Brasil insisting that Liverpool ‘want to keep’ Firmino and will not enter into negotiations to sell him.
It is understood that Firmino ‘still has the approval’ of Klopp in the dressing room and that the German boss ‘wants the player to continue at Anfield and does not intend to lose him’.
Despite claims of a Juve bid, Goal Brasil claim that an ‘official proposal’ has not yet come from the Old Lady as they continue to monitor and assess the situation.
If they do make a formal bid for Firmino, Juventus are hoping that their offer of more minutes could prove tempting – but it would take ‘a giant offer’ now to turn Liverpool’s heads.
In 20 Premier League appearances last term Firmino contributed five goals and four assists and he will continue to chip in this season, especially if Liverpool repeat their hunt for a Quadruple next campaign.
And former Premier League striker Noel Whelan doubts Liverpool will cash in on the Brazilian this summer, he told Football Insider: “He’s one of these players who is great to have around at a football club,
“If he’s got it in his mind that he wants to stay one more year, I don’t think Liverpool will begrudge him that.
“He’s been a fantastic servant to the football club, there’s never any grumbling or issues with him. He’s very professional.”
