Liverpool will be able to trigger a new release clause in the contract of top midfield target Alexis Mac Allister, according to the latest update.

Mac Allister has become Liverpool’s priority target to strengthen their midfield this summer. After Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham became too expensive, Mac Allister now looks likely to be Liverpool’s marquee midfield signing.

Their pursuit of the Brighton star has been progressing well in recent weeks. Now, an update from Football Insider has revealed what Liverpool’s offer might look like.

According to the website, it has come to light that there is a release clause in Mac Allister’s contract with Brighton. It was inserted last October when the Argentina international extended his deal with the Seagulls until 2025, with the option of a further year.

It is not exactly clear what the value of the release clause is, but it means Brighton won’t be able to stand in Mac Allister’s way if Liverpool pay up.

The information would tally with Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi’s recent admission that Mac Allister might depart the Amex Stadium in the summer.

However, Liverpool might not give Brighton the money in one go. Instead, the report says talks are ‘advancing’ between the two clubs about how to structure the payments.

In theory, Liverpool could pay for Mac Allister in instalments, eventually meeting his release clause if that is the valuation Brighton are holding out for.

Liverpool lead Man Utd, Chelsea in Mac Allister transfer battle

Although other suitors like Man Utd and Chelsea have been looking at Mac Allister, Liverpool are deemed to be the frontrunners. They are even willing to triple the salary that the 24-year-old earns on the south coast.

Mac Allister could effectively swap places with James Milner, whose upcoming release from Liverpool has been confirmed, with Brighton in pole position to sign him on a free transfer.

As well as Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will be vacating their roles in the Liverpool midfield this summer. Remaining options like Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Thiago Alcantara are either in on approaching their twilight years.

Therefore, Jurgen Klopp is keen to get some new midfielders to be at his disposal from next season onwards. As a World Cup winner, Mac Allister could be a headline addition if all goes to plan.

Reports on Thursday suggested that Mac Allister could be followed by a couple of shrewder purchases, potentially from the Eredivisie.
